Iris, 92, Cuts The Ribbon To Declare The Deli Officially Open
After a hectic weekend, the time finally arrived this morning to cut the ribbon and declare the Deli officially “Open”.
We asked Iris Parrish, 92, to do us the honour of cutting the ribbon. Iris is the oldest resident of CORA (the Circle Of Residents Association) which serves the people of Higher Prospect Village.
Iris has two grown up children, 5 grand-children and 7 great-grand-children – some of whom were there this morning to see Iris perform the most important of duties for us!
It’s thirsty work opening a Deli! “I was pleased to be asked” said Iris, “I’ve lived here for that many years now, you get to know everyone and I’d hate to live anywhere else”. Iris remembers The Rag, recalling it as being “much smaller, just a counter serving beer, nothing like it is today”.
We are selling our own range of homemade pies, sausages and cooked deli meats as well as a range of fresh bread, muffins, cookies, fruit and vegetables and basic grocery provisions.
Benny will also be introducing a fresh fish (to order) service over the coming weeks.
The deli will be open Monday – Saturday 8am – 6pm, and 10 am – 4pm on Sundays and Bank Holidays.
We are so excited here at The Rag ….. the brand new Deli is almost ready, and is being officially opened on Monday 8th July by Rawnsley’s oldest resident, Iris Parish.
Ms Parish, 92, has memories of delivering the post to the Rag back when it was known locally as The Raglan House and is a popular figure with locals, thanks to her daily walks around the village – many of you will have seen her on her travels, so it seemed fitting to ask her to do the honours and perform our official opening for us.
The deli will stock our own brand of home-made pies, sausages, deli meats, fresh fish (to order) and home-made chutneys as well as basic groceries and provisions.

The shop-build is really gathering momentum now, with the inside all kitted out with a proper floor, a back door, front door and even some snazzy baskets, just waiting to be filled with produce!
We have a chiller cabinet in place, although at the moment it’s doubling up as a tool storage unit. Fear not, in a matter of weeks it will be bursting with delicious deli meats, cheeses and other local produce to tempt you with.
Everyone has worked really hard, sometimes in the most dreadful weather conditions. It’s just typical that now we’re working in the inside of the shop, the sun has come out and is cracking the flags!
We’re aiming to open the deli in mid-June. We’ll keep you posted as to any special events planned for the grand opening. If all else fails, we can always rely on the Laird and Lady of Glencairn to do the honours for us ….
Just over a week ago, building work started on the new deli/shop here at The Rag. The weather wasn’t always on our side but the enterprising builders made use of the marquee, turning it into a temporary workshop for wood cutting and frame building.
Seven days later and we’ve gone from a concrete base to a full shell of a shop – we even have a roof (of sorts)!
The weather can do its best and throw what it likes our way as we are now working on the inside of the shop, with electrical works due to be undertaken over the next week or so.
We’re aiming for an opening date in early June – we’ll keep you informed of progress!
With so much planned for The Rag over the coming weeks and months, we thought how better to share with you everything that’s going on as soon as it happens than to blog about it.
Work is about to begin on the new on-site deli/village shop, which we are aiming to open towards the end of May. It’s a venture that we’re really excited about and we felt the time was right to give something back to the village of Rawnsley that would benefit the whole community.
We’re also planning on introducing a light bar-snack menu in the bar in the next few weeks, as well as on-site camping facilities later in the summer – all this as well as our range of guest ales, quiz night on a Tuesday, the bowls team and our ever popular 2 for £30 menu Monday to Thursday.
Don’t forget we now also have en suite accommodation at The Rag, so if you’re dining with us for a special occasion why not turn it into a mini break and stay the night.
